The first, funded by the ISF, investigates how English is processed as a third language by Arabic-Hebrew-English trilinguals. This is a five-year longitudinal study that will follow university students and examine how their first and second languages influence phonological, lexical, and syntactic abilities in their third language. The research program is capitalizing on a new exciting domain of investigation, using sophisticated technology for tracking participants’ eye-movements while they read or perform other cognitive tasks. The first year of the project was dedicated to recruiting a research team, designing and piloting the research tasks, and putting together the study’s infrastructure.

The second large research project launched this year is a collaboration with Prof. Shuly Wintner, a computational linguist from the Computer Science Department at the University of Haifa, and Prof. Anke Ludeling, a linguist from Humboldt University in Berlin. This project is a true multi-disciplinary endeavor, which will combine methods from natural language processing on large language corpora, close annotation of learner corpora, and behavioral studies conducted in our lab. The project is designed to identify similarities and differences between the language of translation and the language produced by bilingual or multilingual language users.

At Prof. Mark Leikin’s lab for the study of bilingualism, one of the studies conducted by his team is on semantic processing: understanding proverbs among Russian-Hebrew bilinguals. This study aims to examine Russian-Hebrew bilinguals (children of newcomers from the former Soviet Union) in their ability to master their first but not dominant language, Russian, using behavioral measures and electrophysiological (Event Related Potential) parameters.

The ERP experiment was conducted on proficient Hebrew learners whose native language was Russian, to inspect their mastery of Russian figurative comprehension and to detect the differences in electroencephalograph (EEG) components when exposed to different types of idioms (on three levels of similarity – lexical, post lexical, and no match).

According to ERP results, they first demonstrated activity in language processing sites, and then different activity of the right and left hemispheres was found, according to the level of similarity processed. In general, the results suggest a lower proficiency in the Russian language as opposed to the Hebrew language, among this specific population.

Bilingualism Prof. Anat Prior’s team has made significant progress in their main research projects and launched two large and exciting new projects.
