Director’s note –
The Edmond J. Safra Brain Research Center for the Study of Learning Disabilities has always set itself the twin goals. First, to generate cutting edge research and second, to create usable innovative knowledge about learning and learning disabilities. Together, these goals can serve the advancement of the many facets of literacy, math, cognitive and emotional development of the diverse populations of children in Israel. This year our Center has expanded with a young, exuberant faculty studying the role of emotions, perception and technology in development.
With the sudden shift away from classroom learning in many parts of the globe during COVID 19, there is great speculation whether the adoption of online learning will continue to persist post-pandemic, and how such a shift would impact the worldwide academic and mental health of diverse learners.
COVID 19 has proved to be not only a health pandemic but also an education pandemic. We felt both obligated and proud to be able to share our knowledge, both scientifically and policy-wise, with the scientific and decision-making authorities in Israel this year.
As a leading scientific authority in child development and learning disabilities in Hebrew and Arabic, our Center played a major research and consulting role this year for the transition to e-learning during Covid 19.
As is summarized in this report, during this year we studied the effects of COVID-19 on children, teachers, and curriculum implementation. Our faculty received multiple matching grants to study these topics and served as leading experts on many national and international committees. Our researchers also used this time to create online teacher training programs, to develop new ways to evaluate development and to consolidate and summarize the vast amount of data collected during the past few years in the longitudinal study.
We believe that our groundbreaking work at the Edmond J. Safra Center is a beacon of light and hope that can help realize the country’s human potential and prepare our children for the 21st century especially during these challenging times.

Our senior scientists are the heads of lab and members of the lab teams. They are the ones who carry out research, teach, supervise students, publish, write, contribute to the intellectual atmosphere, challenge young scientists to excel and set the standards for scientific excellence. It is our senior staff who creates the family atmosphere that encourages working, creating and implementing.
